2 Chronicles Chapter 1 Inductive Bible Study - Outline, Key Words, Cross References, Observations, Discussion Questions

Solomon’s Throne Established

Chapter 1:1-17

1 Now Solomon the son of David established himself securely over his kingdom, and the LORD his God was with him and exalted him greatly.

2 Solomon spoke to all Israel, to the commanders of thousands and of hundreds and to the judges and to every leader in all Israel, the heads of the fathers' households.

3 Then Solomon and all the assembly with him went to the high place which was at Gibeon, for God's tent of meeting was there, which Moses the servant of the LORD had made in the wilderness.

4 However, David had brought up the ark of God from Kiriath-jearim to the place he had prepared for it, for he had pitched a tent for it in Jerusalem.

5 Now the bronze altar, which Bezalel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, had made, was there before the tabernacle of the LORD, and Solomon and the assembly sought it out.

6 Solomon went up there before the LORD to the bronze altar which was at the tent of meeting, and offered a thousand burnt offerings on it.

7 In that night God appeared to Solomon and said to him, "Ask what I shall give you."

8 Solomon said to God, "You have dealt with my father David with great lovingkindness, and have made me king in his place.

9 "Now, O LORD God, Your promise to my father David is fulfilled, for You have made me king over a people as numerous as the dust of the earth.

10 " Give me now wisdom and knowledge, that I may go out and come in before this people, for who can rule this great people of Yours?"

11 God said to Solomon, "Because you had this in mind, and did not ask for riches, wealth or honor, or the life of those who hate you, nor have you even asked for long life, but you have asked for yourself wisdom and knowledge that you may rule My people over whom I have made you king,

12 wisdom and knowledge have been granted to you. And I will give you riches and wealth and honor, such as none of the kings who were before you has possessed nor those who will come after you."

13 So Solomon went from the high place which was at Gibeon, from the tent of meeting, to Jerusalem, and he reigned over Israel.

14 Solomon amassed chariots and horsemen. He had 1,400 chariots and 12,000 horsemen, and he stationed them in the chariot cities and with the king at Jerusalem.

15 The king made silver and gold as plentiful in Jerusalem as stones, and he made cedars as plentiful as sycamores in the lowland.

16 Solomon's horses were imported from Egypt and from Kue; the king's traders procured them from Kue for a price.

17 They imported chariots from Egypt for 600 shekels of silver apiece and horses for 150 apiece, and by the same means they exported them to all the kings of the Hittites and the kings of Aram.

Cross References, Questions, Observations

1 Now Solomon the son of David established himself securely over his kingdom, and the LORD his God was with him and exalted him greatly.

1 Ki 2:13-25

13 Now Adonijah the son of Haggith came to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon. And she said, " Do you come peacefully?" And he said, "Peacefully."

14 Then he said, "I have something to say to you." And she said, "Speak."

15 So he said, "You know that the kingdom was mine and that all Israel expected me to be king; however, the kingdom has turned about and become my brother's, for it was his from the LORD.

16 "Now I am making one request of you; do not refuse me." And she said to him, "Speak."

17 Then he said, "Please speak to Solomon the king, for he will not refuse you, that he may give me Abishag the Shunammite as a wife."

18 Bathsheba said, "Very well; I will speak to the king for you."

19 So Bathsheba went to King Solomon to speak to him for Adonijah. And the king arose to meet her, bowed before her, and sat on his throne; then he had a throne set for the king's mother, and she sat on his right.

20 Then she said, "I am making one small request of you; do not refuse me." And the king said to her, "Ask, my mother, for I will not refuse you."

21 So she said, " Let Abishag the Shunammite be given to Adonijah your brother as a wife."

22 King Solomon answered and said to his mother, "And why are you asking Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah? Ask for him also the kingdom —  for he is my older brother — even for him, for Abiathar the priest, and for Joab the son of Zeruiah!"

23 Then King Solomon swore by the LORD, saying, "May God do so to me and more also, if Adonijah has not spoken this word against his own life.

24 "Now therefore, as the LORD lives, who has established me and set me on the throne of David my father and who has made me a house as He promised, surely Adonijah shall be put to death today."

25 So King Solomon sent Benaiah the son of Jehoiada; and he fell upon him so that he died.

1 Ki 2:28-35

28 Now the news came to Joab, for Joab had followed Adonijah, although he had not followed Absalom. And Joab fled to the tent of the LORD and took hold of the horns of the altar.

29 It was told King Solomon that Joab had fled to the tent of the LORD, and behold, he is beside the altar. Then Solomon sent Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, saying, " Go, fall upon him."

30 So Benaiah came to the tent of the LORD and said to him, "Thus the king has said, 'Come out.'" But he said, "No, for I will die here." And Benaiah brought the king word again, saying, "Thus spoke Joab, and thus he answered me."

31 The king said to him, " Do as he has spoken and fall upon him and bury him, that you may remove from me and from my father's house the blood which Joab shed without cause.

32 " The LORD will return his blood on his own head, because he fell upon two men more righteous and better than he and killed them with the sword, while my father David did not know it:  Abner the son of Ner, commander of the army of Israel, and Amasa the son of Jether, commander of the army of Judah.

33 " So shall their blood return on the head of Joab and on the head of his descendants forever; but to David and his descendants and his house and his throne, may there be peace from the LORD forever."

34 Then Benaiah the son of Jehoiada went up and fell upon him and put him to death, and he was buried at his own house in the wilderness.

35 The king appointed Benaiah the son of Jehoiada over the army in his place, and the king appointed Zadok the priest in the place of Abiathar.

1 Ki 2:36-46

36 Now the king sent and called for Shimei and said to him, "Build for yourself a house in Jerusalem and live there, and do not go out from there to any place.

37 "For on the day you go out and cross over the brook Kidron, you will know for certain that you shall surely die; your blood shall be on your own head."

38 Shimei then said to the king, "The word is good. As my lord the king has said, so your servant will do." So Shimei lived in Jerusalem many days.

39 But it came about at the end of three years, that two of the servants of Shimei ran away to Achish son of Maacah, king of Gath. And they told Shimei, saying, "Behold, your servants are in Gath."

40 Then Shimei arose and saddled his donkey, and went to Gath to Achish to look for his servants. And Shimei went and brought his servants from Gath.

41 It was told Solomon that Shimei had gone from Jerusalem to Gath, and had returned.

42 So the king sent and called for Shimei and said to him, "Did I not make you swear by the LORD and solemnly warn you, saying, 'You will know for certain that on the day you depart and go anywhere, you shall surely die'? And you said to me, 'The word which I have heard is good.'

43 "Why then have you not kept the oath of the LORD, and the command which I have laid on you?"

44 The king also said to Shimei, " You know all the evil which you acknowledge in your heart, which you did to my father David; therefore the LORD shall return your evil on your own head.

45 "But King Solomon shall be blessed, and the throne of David shall be established before the LORD forever."

46 So the king commanded Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and he went out and fell upon him so that he died.  Thus the kingdom was established in the hands of Solomon.

1)     In the transfer of power in a kingdom, there are often elements that are disruptive and even threatening to the establishment of the new kingdom.

2 Solomon spoke to all Israel, to the commanders of thousands and of hundreds and to the judges and to every leader in all Israel, the heads of the fathers' households.

a)

1)     It required time and a great deal of effort to get all of this assembly together. This was a lot of people! Surely tens of thousands, probably hundreds of thousands.

1 Ch 15:1-3

1 Now David built houses for himself in the city of David; and he prepared a place for the ark of God and pitched a tent for it.

2 Then David said, "No one is to carry the ark of God but the Levites; for the LORD chose them to carry the ark of God and to minister to Him forever."

3 And David assembled all Israel at Jerusalem to bring up the ark of the LORD to its place which he had prepared for it.

1 Ch 15:13-15

13 " Because you did not carry it at the first, the LORD our God made an outburst on us, for we did not seek Him according to the ordinance."

14 So the priests and the Levites consecrated themselves to bring up the ark of the LORD God of Israel.

15 The sons of the Levites carried the ark of God on their shoulders with the poles thereon, as Moses had commanded according to the word of the LORD.

1 Ch 15:29-16:2

29 It happened when the ark of the covenant of the LORD came to the city of David, that Michal the daughter of Saul looked out of the window and saw King David leaping and celebrating; and she despised him in her heart.

16:1 And they brought in the ark of God and placed it inside the tent which David had pitched for it, and they offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before God.

2 When David had finished offering the burnt offering and the peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the LORD.

5 Now the bronze altar, which Bezalel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, had made, was there before the tabernacle of the LORD, and Solomon and the assembly sought it out.

Ex 38:1-7

1 Then he made the altar of burnt offering of acacia wood, five cubits long, and five cubits wide, square, and three cubits high.

2 He made its horns on its four corners, its horns being of one piece with it, and he overlaid it with bronze.

3 He made all the utensils of the altar, the pails and the shovels and the basins, the flesh hooks and the firepans; he made all its utensils of bronze.

4 He made for the altar a grating of bronze network beneath, under its ledge, reaching halfway up.

5 He cast four rings on the four ends of the bronze grating as holders for the poles.

6 He made the poles of acacia wood and overlaid them with bronze.

7 He inserted the poles into the rings on the sides of the altar, with which to carry it. He made it hollow with planks.

10' He shall build a house for My name, and he shall be My son and I will be his father; and I will establish the throne of his kingdom over Israel forever.'

2 Sa 12:24-25

Then David comforted his wife Bathsheba, and went in to her and lay with her; and she gave birth to a son, and he named him Solomon. Now the LORD loved him

25 and sent word through Nathan the prophet, and he named him Jedidiah for the LORD'S sake.

1.      Age at beginning of reign

Solomon was born well after David became king, although we can’t be sure of the date. We do know that it was probably several years after David moved to Jerusalem: he appears to have been in Jerusalem for some time when he met Solomon’s mother Bathsheba (2 Samuel 11:1-3), and then there has to be another couple of years to allow for Bathsheba’s first pregnancy, marriage to David, and then a second pregnancy. So that places Solomon’s birth at least 10 years into David’s reign, which means that Solomon was under 30 when he became king. Shortly after he became king he married the daughter of Pharaoh (1 Kings 3:1) which would suggest he was probably at least 20 years old.

He describes himself as a “little child” (1 Kings 3:7), although that is surely an exaggeration.

In summary, we can be reasonably confident that Solomon was in his 20s when he became king, but it is not possible to be more precise.

2 What, O my son? And what, O son of my womb? And what, O son of my vows?

3 Do not give your strength to women, Or your ways to that which destroys kings.

4 It is not for kings, O Lemuel, It is not for kings to drink wine, Or for rulers to desire strong drink,

5 For they will drink and forget what is decreed, And pervert the rights of all the afflicted.

6 Give strong drink to him who is perishing, And wine to him whose life is bitter.

7 Let him drink and forget his poverty And remember his trouble no more.

8 Open your mouth for the mute, For the rights of all the unfortunate.

9 Open your mouth, judge righteously, And defend the rights of the afflicted and needy.

c.    His father David

1 Ki 2:1-4

1 As David's time to die drew near, he charged Solomon his son, saying,

2 " I am going the way of all the earth. Be strong, therefore, and show yourself a man.

3 "Keep the charge of the LORD your God, to walk in His ways, to keep His statutes, His commandments, His ordinances, and His testimonies, according to what is written in the Law of Moses, that you may succeed in all that you do and wherever you turn,

4 so that the LORD may carry out His promise which He spoke concerning me, saying, ' If your sons are careful of their way, to walk before Me in truth with all their heart and with all their soul, you shall not lack a man on the throne of Israel.'

1 Ki 4:26

26 Solomon had 40,000 stalls of horses for his chariots, and 12,000 horsemen

b.   Married foreign wives

Pr 31:3 (advice from his mother)

3 Do not give your strength to women, Or your ways to that which destroys kings.

1 Ki 11:3

3 He had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines, and his wives turned his heart away.

c.    Accumulated great quantities of gold and silver

Dt 17:17

17 "He shall not multiply wives for himself, or else his heart will  turn away; nor shall he greatly increase silver and gold for himself.

2 Ch 9:13-20

13 Now the weight of gold which came to Solomon in one year was 666 talents of gold ,

14 besides that which the traders and merchants brought; and all the kings of Arabia and the governors of the country brought gold and silver to Solomon.

15 King Solomon made 200 large shields of beaten gold , using 600 shekels of beaten gold on each large shield.

16 He made 300 shields of beaten gold , using three hundred shekels of gold on each shield, and the king put them in the house of the forest of Lebanon.

17 Moreover, the king made a great throne of ivory and overlaid it with pure gold .

18 There were six steps to the throne and a footstool in gold attached to the throne, and arms on each side of the seat, and two lions standing beside the arms.

19 Twelve lions were standing there on the six steps on the one side and on the other; nothing like it was made for any other kingdom.

20 All King Solomon's drinking vessels were of gold , and all the vessels of the house of the forest of Lebanon were of pure gold ; silver was not considered valuable in the days of Solomon.

d.   Turned to worshiping idols

1 Ki 11:4

4 For when Solomon was old, his wives turned his heart away after other gods; and his heart was not wholly devoted to the LORD his God, as the heart of David his father had been.

8.      Wars during his reign

1 Ki 11:14

14 Then the LORD raised up an adversary to Solomon, Hadad the Edomite; he was of the royal line in Edom.

1 Ki 11:23

23 God also raised up another adversary to him, Rezon the son of Eliada, who had fled from his lord Hadadezer king of Zobah.

1 Ki 11:23-26

23 God also raised up another adversary to him, Rezon the son of Eliada, who had fled from his lord Hadadezer king of Zobah.

24 He gathered men to himself and became leader of a marauding band, after David slew them of Zobah; and they went to Damascus and stayed there, and reigned in Damascus.

25 So he was an adversary to Israel all the days of Solomon, along with the evil that Hadad did; and he abhorred Israel and reigned over Aram.

26 Then Jeroboam the son of Nebat, an Ephraimite of Zeredah, Solomon's servant, whose mother's name was Zeruah, a widow, also rebelled against the king.

Treaty with Hiram

The Queen of Sheba’s visit

2 Ch 9:1-6

1 Now when the queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon, she came to Jerusalem to test Solomon with difficult questions. She had a very large retinue, with camels carrying spices and a large amount of gold and precious stones; and when she came to Solomon, she spoke with him about all that was on her heart.

2 Solomon answered all her questions; nothing was hidden from Solomon which he did not explain to her.

3 When the queen of Sheba had seen the wisdom of Solomon, the house which he had built,

4 the food at his table, the seating of his servants, the attendance of his ministers and their attire, his cupbearers and their attire, and his stairway by which he went up to the house of the LORD, she was breathless.

5 Then she said to the king, "It was a true report which I heard in my own land about your words and your wisdom.

6 "Nevertheless I did not believe their reports until I came and my eyes had seen it. And behold, the half of the greatness of your wisdom was not told me. You surpass the report that I heard.

12. How he died

1 Ki 11:43

43 And Solomon slept with his fathers and was buried in the city of his father David, and his son Rehoboam reigned in his place.

13. Where he was buried                                                           Jerusalem

14. Do you think we’ll see him in heaven?

Yes, even though his wives turned his heart away from the Lord I think he went to heaven for several reasons.

a.      Though he strayed for years, Ecclesiastes indicates that he got back right with the Lord prior to his death.

b.      It says he slept with his fathers. This wording is usually reserved for good kings.

2 Ch 9:31

And Solomon slept with his fathers and was buried in the city of his father David; and his son Rehoboam reigned in his place.

c.      He wrote Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon and much Proverbs. I don’t think there is any instance that God uses an unbeliever to write any book  of the Bible.

15. Who reigned after him                                                         His son Rehoboam

16. Most important thing to remember about him

Even Solomon strayed from following the Lord and started worshipping idols when he neglected the Lord’s commandment. Women (lust of the flesh), riches (lust of the eyes) and power (the boastful pride of life) were his downfall.

Key Verse

11 God said to Solomon, "Because you had this in mind, and did not ask for riches, wealth or honor, or the life of those who hate you, nor have you even asked for long life, but you have asked for yourself wisdom and knowledge that you may rule My people over whom I have made you king,

12 wisdom and knowledge have been granted to you. And I will give you riches and wealth and honor, such as none of the kings who were before you has possessed nor those who will come after you."
