2 John 7-13 Bible Lesson with Discussion Questions, Verse by Verse Commentary, and Cross References

2 John 7-13

Embrace Sound Doctrine, Not Deceivers

Summary- There are many deceivers and antichrists who go out into the world spreading false doctrine that does not acknowledge  Jesus’ humanity. We must be careful not to believe them or help them, lest we lose some of our reward. If we sin and do not have a biblical understanding of Christ, we do not have God, but we have both God and Christ if we practice sound doctrine.

We must not accept people into our house who do not have biblical doctrine. Showing such people hospitality causes us to share in their evil deeds.

John would write more, but he hoped to see the recipient of the letter face to face, in order to make their joy full.

Central Teaching- Sound doctrine is of utmost importance, whether we are practicing it ourselves or showing hospitality to those who teach it.

Key Verse- 8

Key Words- deceivers, gone out, confess, flesh, antichrist, watch, lose, reward, transgresses, abide, doctrine, receive, greet, joy

Ten things this passage says-

  1. Many deceivers have gone out into the world.
  2. These deceivers and antichrists do not confess the humanity of Jesus Christ.
  3. We need to be careful not to lose our reward which we have worked for.
  4. If we sin and do not abide in the doctrine of Christ, we do not have God.
  5. If we abide in the doctrine of Christ, we have both the Father and the Son.
  6. We should not receive or greet anyone who comes to us without the proper biblical understanding of who Christ is.
  7. We must be discerning about who we help in ministry.
  8. If we help those who are spreading lies about Christ, we share in their evil deeds.
  9. Face to face communication provides fuller joy than letters.
  10. Everything John wrote is true, and will be carried out.

Ten things this passage does NOT say-

  1. There may have been deceivers in the past, and there may be more in the future, but this is the age of enlightenment, and no one would try to deceive us now.
  2. As long as we realize that Christ is God, it doesn’t really matter if we acknowledge his humanity.
  3. Once we have earned a reward, it is ours forever; there is no way we can lose it.
  4. God’s grace and mercy is so great that we don’t really have to be careful about our thoughts, words and deeds. Our actions have no consequences.
  5. People can have an unbiblical understanding of Christ’s Deity and humanity and still be Christians.
  6. As long as we are helping people, it doesn’t really  matter who we help, or how we help them.
  7. It’s okay to have fellowship with people who are preaching heresy against Christ.
  8. We can be careless is who we help, or even intentionally help someone who is involved in false teaching against Christ, and God will not hold us accountable for that.
  9. Personal contact is overrated. Letters, email, phone calls, etc. are enough.
  10. Some of what John wrote is questionable, unclear, and open to personal interpretation.

What does this passage teach us about God?

God’s truth is unchanging and incontrovertible.

He will not tolerate false teaching raised up against Him.
He gives rewards, and takes them away, based on our obedience to Him.

If we have Him, we have the Son also.

He requires us to be careful in our doctrine and in our ministry to others.

He is uncompromising towards those who practice evil or help those who practice evil.

He is truth, and He will fulfill everything He has written.

2 John 7-

2 Peter 2:1-3

But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will also be false teachers among you, who will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing swift destruction upon themselves. 2 Many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of the truth will be maligned; 3 and in their  greed they will exploit you with false words; their judgment from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.

1 John 2:18-22

18 Children, it is the last hour; and just as you heard that antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have appeared; from this we know that it is the last hour. 19 They went out from us, but they were not really of us; for if they had been of us, they would have remained with us; but they went out,  so that it would be shown that they all are not of us. 20 But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you all know. 21 I have not written to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it, and because no lie is of the truth. 22 Who is the liar but the one who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, the one who denies the Father and the Son.

But each man must be careful how he builds on it. 11 For no man can lay a foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 now if any man builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, 13 each man’s work will become evident;  for the day will show it because it is to be revealed with fire, and the fire itself will test the quality of each man’s work.14 If any man’s work which he has built on it remains, he will receive a reward. 15 If any man’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire. 16 Do you not know that you are a temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? 17 If any man among you thinks that he is wise in this age, he must become foolish, so that he may become wise.
