About the Poem and Writer: This poem was written by Zhu Ge Liang (181-234). He is one ofthe most famous characters in Chinese history and known as an inventor, strategist, political figurein the Three Kingdoms period of time. He also is the subject of a number of Chinese proverbs, legends, and stories such as the popular book, The Romance of the Three Kingdoms. This poem was written for his own son, when he was 54. It expresses his wish that his son would become virtuous and not be preoccupied with amibtion for money or power. Zhu Ge Liang was known as having great foresight.
