I. Thursday The Passover, Last Supper, Garden, Arrest
· Matthew 26:20-25
Now when evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the twelve disciples.
21 As they were eating, He said, “Truly I say to you that one of you will betray Me.”
22 Being deeply grieved, they each one began to say to Him, “Surely not I, Lord?”
23 And He answered, “He who dipped his hand with Me in the bowl is the one who will betray Me.
24 “The Son of Man is to go, just as it is written of Him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had not been born.”
25 And Judas, who was betraying Him, said, “Surely it is not I, Rabbi?” Jesus said to him, “You have said it yourself.”
o Jesus discloses that it is Judas who will betray Him.
· Jn 13:3-5
3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come forth from God and was going back to God,
4 got up from supper, and laid aside His garments; and taking a towel, He girded Himself.
5 Jesus Washes the Disciples’ Feet Then He poured water into the basin, and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded.
o This is one of Jesus’ final lessons to the twelve before He goes to the cross. As the ultimate humble servant, Jesus teaches them by example that the road to exaltation is paved with humility.
· Jn 13:34-35
34 “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another.
35 ” By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”
· Jn 13:38
38 Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for Me? Truly, truly, I say to you, a rooster will not crow until you deny Me three times.
o Following Peter’s assertion of his absolute loyalty, Jesus declares his imminent betrayal three times!
· In John chapters 14-16, Jesus comforts the disciples
o 14:2,3 though He’s leaving, He’ll prepare a place for them and come back to tget them.
o 14:6 He declares that He is the only way to reach the Father
o 14:13 He promises to answer their prayers
o 14:15 He says that obedience is how they can demonstrate their love for Him.
o 14:16 He will send the Holy Spirit to be their Helper
o 14:27 He gives them His peace
o 14:29 He tells them in advance what will happen so that they will believe
o 15:5 If they abide in Him, they will be very fruitful, but if they don’t they can do nothing
o 15:9 He reassures them of His incredible love for them
o 15:11 He promises them His joy.
o 15:13 He communicates that the greatest love that can be shown is to give one’s life for one’s friends (which He will soon do)!
o 15:16 They didn’t choose Him, but He chose them so that they could bear fruit!
o 15:17 They are commanded to love one another.
o 15:19 Since they are not of the world, the world will hate them.
o 16:16 He foretells His resurrection.
· Jesus prays for the twelve John 15:9
· Jesus prays for all subsequent believers. John 15:20
· Jesus prays three times that the cup (His crucifixion) be removed from Him, yet He didn’t want His will, but His Father’s to be done Matt 16:39, 42, 44
· Mt 26:45-50
45 Then He came to the disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Behold, the hour is at hand and the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners.
46 “Get up, let us be going; behold, the one who betrays Me is at hand!”
47 While He was still speaking, behold, Judas, one of the twelve, came up accompanied by a large crowd with swords and clubs, who came from the chief priests and elders of the people.
48 Now he who was betraying Him gave them a sign, saying, “Whomever I kiss, He is the one; seize Him.”
49 Immediately Judas went to Jesus and said, “Hail, Rabbi!” and kissed Him.
50 And Jesus said to him, “Friend, do what you have come for.” Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and seized Him.
· Once again, Jesus foretells His betrayal and arrest. This one is instantly fulfilled after He makes it.
· Clearly, the mob is not in control, but Jesus is.
· Observe Jesus kindness to Judas even at the moment he was betraying Him. What an incredible example for us to follow
II. Friday The Trials, Denials, Crucifixion, Burial
· Mt 26:62-66
62 The high priest stood up and said to Him, “Do You not answer? What is it that these men are testifying against You?”
63 But Jesus kept silent. And the high priest said to Him, “I adjure You by the living God, that You tell us whether You are the Christ, the Son of God.”
64 Jesus said to him, ” You have said it yourself; nevertheless I tell you, hereafter you will see THE SON OF MAN SITTING AT THE RIGHT HAND OF POWER, and COMING ON THE CLOUDS OF HEAVEN.”
65 Then the high priest tore his robes and said, “He has blasphemed! What further need do we have of witnesses? Behold, you have now heard the blasphemy;
66 what do you think?” They answered, “He deserves death!”
Before Caiaphas, He was silent except for offering testimony that they could use to require His death!
· Mt 26:74-75
74 Then he began to curse and swear, “I do not know the man!” And immediately a rooster crowed.
75 And Peter remembered the word which Jesus had said, ” Before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly.
Peter denied Jesus three times just as Jesus predicted he would.
· Mt 27:24-31
24 When Pilate saw that he was accomplishing nothing, but rather that a riot was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of this Man’s blood; see to that yourselves.”
25 And all the people said, “His blood shall be on us and on our children!”
26 Then he released Barabbas for them; but after having Jesus scourged, he handed Him over to be crucified.
27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole Roman cohort around Him.
28 They stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him.
29 And after twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand; and they knelt down before Him and mocked Him, saying, ” Hail, King of the Jews!”
30 They spat on Him, and took the reed and began to beat Him on the head.
31 After they had mocked Him, they took the scarlet robe off Him and put His own garments back on Him, and led Him away to crucify Him.
o So Jesus goes before Pilate who repeatedly states he finds no fault in Jesus, but gives in to the Jews demands nonetheless and condemns Him to be crucified.
Finally, Jesus hour had come. The purpose of His coming to earth and redeeming sinful man would be realized. He would be crucified.
· Mt 27:41-45
41 In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes and elders, were mocking Him and saying,
42 ” He saved others; He cannot save Himself. He is the King of Israel; let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe in Him.
43 “HE TRUSTS IN GOD; LET GOD RESCUE Him now, IF HE DELIGHTS IN HIM; for He said, ‘I am the Son of God.'”
44 The robbers who had been crucified with Him were also insulting Him with the same words.
45 Now from the sixth hour darkness fell upon all the land until the ninth hour.
o The mocking and insults continue through the crucifixion.
o
· Mt 27:50-54
50 And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit.
51 And behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth shook and the rocks were split.
52 The tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised;
53 and coming out of the tombs after His resurrection they entered the holy city and appeared to many.
54 Now the centurion, and those who were with him keeping guard over Jesus, when they saw the earthquake and the things that were happening, became very frightened and said, “Truly this was the Son of God!”
How could it be that the Son of God Himself who was totally pure and innocent could be treated in such a shameful way and die such an agonizing death? It was the only way. Remember Jesus’ prayer in the garden of Gethsemane requesting that the cup of death be removed from Him if there was any other way. There was no other way. In order for God’s wrath to be fully vented against our vile sin, Jesus had to die in this horrible way!
· Rv 13:8
8 All who dwell on the earth will worship him, everyone whose name has not been written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who has been slain .
· 1 Pe 2:24
24 and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed.
· 1 Pe 3:18
18 For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit;
· Isa 53:3-7
3 He was despised and forsaken of men, A man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; And like one from whom men hide their face He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.
4 Surely our griefs He Himself bore, And our sorrows He carried; Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken, Smitten of God, and afflicted.
5 But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, And by His scourging we are healed.
6 All of us like sheep have gone astray, Each of us has turned to his own way; But the LORD has caused the iniquity of us all To fall on Him.
7 He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He did not open His mouth; Like a lamb that is led to slaughter, And like a sheep that is silent before its shearers, So He did not open His mouth.
Isaiah wrote this over 700 years prior to the crucifixion.
· Mt 27:57-61
57 When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who himself had also become a disciple of Jesus.
58 This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given to him.
59 And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,
60 and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock; and he rolled a large stone against the entrance of the tomb and went away.
61 And Mary Magdalene was there, and the other Mary, sitting opposite the grave.
o Jesus was given a dignified burial
o Mary Magdalene was there and observed the burial
· Mt 27:62-66
62 Now on the next day, the day after the preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered together with Pilate,
63 and said, “Sir, we remember that when He was still alive that deceiver said, ‘After three days I am to rise again.’
64 “Therefore, give orders for the grave to be made secure until the third day, otherwise His disciples may come and steal Him away and say to the people, ‘He has risen from the dead,’ and the last deception will be worse than the first.”
65 Pilate said to them, “You have a guard; go, make it as secure as you know how.”
66 And they went and made the grave secure, and along with the guard they set a seal on the stone.
o Jesus’ prediction that He would rise from the dead after three days was well known, even to His enemies.
o The guard was likely a force of about 16 men.
o They were to guard the tomb with their lives. If the seal was broken, they would be executed.
o Jesus’ enemies went to great lengths to insure that His body would remain in the tomb. In actuality, God used them to supply proof that His body hadn’t been stolen, but that in fact He had risen from the dead.
III. Sunday Resurrection
· Mt 28:1-9
Now after the Sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to look at the grave.
2 And behold, a severe earthquake had occurred, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled away the stone and sat upon it.
3 And his appearance was like lightning, and his clothing as white as snow.
4 The guards shook for fear of him and became like dead men.
5 The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid; for I know that you are looking for Jesus who has been crucified.
6 “He is not here, for He has risen, just as He said. Come, see the place where He was lying.
7 “Go quickly and tell His disciples that He has risen from the dead; and behold, He is going ahead of you into Galilee, there you will see Him; behold, I have told you.”
8 And they left the tomb quickly with fear and great joy and ran to report it to His disciples.
9 And behold, Jesus met them and greeted them. And they came up and took hold of His feet and worshiped Him.
o The angel appeared to both the women and the guards.
o The purpose of the stone being rolled away was simply to reveal that He wasn’t there (not to release Him).
o Jesus graciously reveals Himself to them. These women were the first to see the resurrected Lord!
o But these weren’t the only ones Jesus appeared to.
· Jn 20:19-22
So when it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and when the doors were shut where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, ” Peace be with you.”
20 And when He had said this, He showed them both His hands and His side. The disciples then rejoiced when they saw the Lord.
21 So Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you; as the Father has sent Me, I also send you.”
22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the
Holy Spirit
· 1 Co 15:3-8
3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,
4 and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,
5 and that He appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve.
6 After that He appeared to more than five hundred brethren at one time, most of whom remain until now, but some have fallen asleep;
7 then He appeared to James, then to all the apostles;
8 and last of all, as to one untimely born, He appeared to me also.
o Jesus appeared on several occasions over a forty day period to many of His followers
o These various appearances to His followers on several occasions provides convincing proof that He rose from the dead. Many of these followers died a martyr’s death as a result of their personal eyewitness of the risen Savior.
· What does His resurrection mean to you today, nearly 2,000 years later?
o It can’t possibly mean any less than that you should repent of our sins and trust Jesus with your life.
o If you are already living your life for the savior, do it with all your heart, soul, mind and strength. He is worthy!
