Jude 17-25 Inductive Bible Study

Jude 17-25

Keep Yourselves in the Love of God

Summary- In contrast to the ungodly, we should remember the things that the apostles told us before about Jesus, that there would be mockers, following their own ungodly lusts. These kinds of people would come between brothers and bring a worldly and unholy spirit with them.

We, however, should build ourselves up in a holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, keeping ourselves in the love f God, waiting eagerly for Christ’s mercy that brings eternal life. At the same time, we should have mercy on those Christians who are struggling with doubt, and diligently work to save others from eternal destruction, without becoming entangled in their sin with them.

Jude closes with a benediction, saying that God is able to keep us from stumbling, to make us stand blamelessly and joyfully in his glorious presence. He alone is God, and He deserves glory, majesty, dominion and authority that surpasses all time and all people.

Central Teaching-We should pay heed to the warnings given us so faithfully, and keep ourselves in the love of God.

Key Verse(s)- 20-21

Key Words- remember, Spirit, keep, mercy

Ten things this passage says-

  1. We should remember the words the apostles spoke beforehand of the Lord Jesus Christ.
  2. In the last times, there will be mockers, following after their own ungodly lusts.
  3. These mockers cause divisions, are worldly minded, and are devoid of the Spirit.
  4. We should build ourselves up on our most holy faith.
  5. We should pray in the Holy Spirit.
  6. We should keep ourselves in the love of God.
  7. We should wait eagerly for Christ’s mercy to eternal life.
  8. We should have mercy on some, who are doubting.
  9. We should save others, who have been influenced by apostates and need to be snatched from the fire.
  10. We should mercifully evangelize to others, but carefully, so as not to be polluted by their sin.
  11. God is able to keep me from stumbling.
  12. God is able to make me stand in the presence of His glory blamelessly and with great joy.
  13. He is the only God, and deserves glory, majesty, dominion and authority, now and forever.

Ten things this passage does NOT say-

  1. The words spoken by the apostles before are outdated and have no bearing on our lives today.
  2. Things are just going to get better and better until Jesus comes back.
  3. Apostates bring unity and spirituality to all.
  4. It doesn’t matter if our faith is weak.
  5. We don’t need to be faithful in prayer, and we can pray in our own power.
  6. We need to keep ourselves by ourselves. We’ll get no help from Him.
  7. As Christians, we should fear the judgment to come.
  8. Harshly judge those who are doubting.
  9. It is too late for those caught up in the lies of the apostates.
  10. As long as we are on God’s side, we don’t have to worry about being polluted by the lies of the enemy.

What does this passage teach me about God?

He warns us well in advance of dangers to come.

He has it all planned out, and He wins in the end.

He loves me.

He has mercy on me to eternal life.

He hates even the suggestion of sin.

He is able to keep me from stumbling.

He makes me stand in the presence of His glory blameless and with great joy.

He is our only God and Savior.

He deserves glory, majesty, dominion and authority, forever and ever.

How does this apply to my life?

I should be cautious as I listen to other’s teaching and theories. I should remember what Jesus and the apostles (and others) said in the Bible, and weigh what I’m hearing against that.

Do things in my life that build up my faith. Memorize more Scripture. Pray believing. Walk in the love of God. Look forward eagerly to His return and eternal life with Him.

Other’s unbelief shouldn’t make me proud of myself, or cause me to judge them or feel impatient with them. Rather, I should show them mercy as I humbly share the gospel with them. At the same time, I should be careful not to mix with them so freely that I am pulled down by their sin and unbelief.

Gal 6:1

Brethren, even if anyone is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you too will not be tempted.

Heb 6:4-8

4 For in the case of those who have once been enlightened and have tasted of the heavenly gift and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit, 5 and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, 6 and then have fallen away, it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and put Him to open shame. 7 For ground that drinks the rain which often falls on it and brings forth vegetation useful to those for whose sake it is also tilled, receives a blessing from God; 8 but if it yields thorns and thistles, it is worthless and close to being cursed, and it ends up being burned.

James 5:19-20

19 My brethren, if any among you strays from the truth and one turns him back, 20 let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.

1 John 5:16-18

16 If anyone sees his brother committing a sin not leading to death, he shall ask andGod will for him give life to those who commit sin not leading to death. There is a sin leading to death; I do not say that he should make request for this. 17 All unrighteousness is sin, and there is a sin not leading to death.

2 Cor 7:10-12

10 For the sorrow that is according to the will of God produces a repentance without regret, leading to salvation, but the sorrow of the world produces death. 11 For behold what earnestness this very thing, this godly sorrow, has produced in you: what vindication of yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what longing, what zeal, what avenging of wrong! In everything you demonstrated yourselves to be innocent in the matter. 12 So although I wrote to you, it was not for the sake of the offender nor for the sake of the one offended, but that your earnestness on our behalf might be made known to you in the sight of God.

1 Cor 5:9-11

9 I wrote you in my letter not to associate with immoral people; 10 I did not at all mean with the immoral people of this world, or with the covetous and swindlers, or with idolaters, for then you would have to go out of the world. 11 But actually, I wrote to you not to associate with any so-called brother if he is an immoral person, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or a swindler — not even to eat with such a one.

25 Now to Him who is able to establish you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery which has been kept secret for long ages past, 26 but now is manifested, and by the Scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the eternal God, has been made known to all the nations, leading to obedience of faith; 27 to the only wise God, through Jesus Christ, be the glory forever. Amen.

2 Tim 4:18

18 The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed, and will bring me safely to His heavenly kingdom; to Him be the glory forever and ever. Amen.

2 Cor 4:14

14 knowing that He who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and will present us with you.

2 For I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy; for I betrothed you to one husband, so that to Christ I might present you as a pure virgin.

Matt 25:31

“But when the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, then He will sit on His glorious throne.

Luke 9:26

26 ” For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when He comes in His glory, and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.

1 Thess 4:16-17

16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord.

1 Peter 4:13

13 but to the degree that you share the sufferings of Christ, keep on rejoicing, so that also at the revelation of His glory you may rejoice with exultation.
