About the Poem and Writer: Written by He Zhi Zhang (659-744) during the Tang Dynasty, The Song of the Willow is famous across China. This ancient Chinese poet is especially known for his expressive descriptions of the natural environment such as water, trees, and mountains. This poem is one of his most famous. In it, he refers to the willow as a lady. All the leaves hang down just like her beautiful green dress. By comparing spring time to a beautiful woman, he shows his respect and admiration for both.
